Intensive Outpatient Program

Dig in so you can branch out.

CAST’S philosophy is, there is no separation between the mind and the body; we are comprised of one unified system, a system whose health is defined by connection and by communication. This program supports healing by focusing on the integrity of the unified whole.
— Aliah Whitmore

The Intensive Outpatient Program is an immersion experience designed for anyone who has the ability to commit to a minimum of four weeks of programming that includes: daily and weekly group therapy, weekly individual therapy, and weekly individual lifestyle coaching. Our staff is committed to helping clients stabilize, uncover, and work through underlying issues. Once clients gain insight about their individual strengths and challenges, they are guided to develop healthier coping strategies.

Staying as long as needed is encouraged and many have remained for 16 weeks or longer before returning to their regular lifetime routines.

All participants in the program live in our Wellness Apartments and have access to our network of professionals that can provide a range of services such: financial planning, academic advising, career aptitude assessment, yoga, nutritional counseling, personal fitness, and time management. (Clients with substance abuse issues will be randomly drug tested to ensure that sobriety is maintained and that the CAST environment remains safe and healthy for everyone.)

Types of treatments

+ Individual Counseling

Private, one-on-one time to focus on particularly salient and challenging topics. Our individual counselors guide clients in addressing both the overt and less obvious issues of life-limiting conditions, providing the greatest potential for growth. We draw from many therapeutic modalities to create a customized, integrative experience for our clients.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Somatic Experiencing (SE)
  • Differentiation of Self
  • Existential and Humanistic Therapy
  • Certified Sex Addiction Therapy
  • Twelve Steps
  • Neurobiology
  • Neurofeedback
  • Sound Therapy
  • Philosophy and Spirituality
  • Mindfulness and Meditation

+ Group Therapy

For those not in immediate crises, group therapy offers the chance for small groups of clients to meet regularly in a safe, comfortable space where talking, sharing, interacting, and discussing problems is facilitated and guided by a therapist. While guiding the group in self-discovery, the therapist also encourages group interaction. Many find that interacting in a group setting is more natural than one-on-one counseling and it affords participants the chance to experience empathy for group members and to release the notion that they are alone in their struggles. Feedback from group members allows for empathy, constructive suggestions, insights, and a sense of camaraderie to develop and aid the healing process.

+ Case Management

The entire CAST team coordinates your care and transition process, conferring daily in order to follow your growth. You will meet on a weekly basis with your case manager so that you can offer your own assessment of how your program is progressing, ask for anything you might need, including support to accomplish your various goals in order to transition out of treatment.Your case manager will also keep you aware of your goals and work with you on any obstacles that might need attention in the achieving of those goals. Setting you up for success is our priority. To that end, we stay involved in and guide you through your process at CAST from beginning to end.

+ Neurofeedback

CAST offers professional neurofeedback training to regulate brainwaves for a healthier and happier lifestyle. Neurofeedback teaches the brain to self-regulate and function more efficiently. By observing the brain in action, this technology allows us to analyze patterns and brainwave function, detect irregularity, and correct brain patterns by training the brain to operate at a more optimal level. Just as physical exercise strengthens the body’s control and resilience, neurofeedback training can do the same for brainwaves. A healthier brain can improve sleep patterns, leading to better alertness throughout the day. It can aid in managing attention span as well as emotions. Training brainwaves can break psychological patters such as anxiety and depression through moment-to-moment, thought-to-thought analysis and a structured development of new, healthier patterns. Neurofeedback can be used to overcome a multitude of psychological obstacles such as: anxiety, ADHD, depression, emotional trauma, autoimmune dysfunctions, premenstrual syndrome, autism, epilepsy, addictive disorders, seizures, chronic fatigue/sleep disorders, tourette’s.

+ Psychiatric Services

CAST has strong relationships with prominent Los Angeles-based, board-certified psychiatrists who have national reputations in the field of psychiatric medicine. We will schedule our clients as needed for a thorough psychiatric assessment with a doctor whose expertise best matches all of a client’s presenting needs. When medications are prescribed, the psychiatrist will meet regularly with the client and will also consult with the CAST team in order to integrate this piece into the overall treatment plan. Everyone works together as a team in a client’s care at CAST. And we encourage every client to be a proactive participant in her or his care. The client, who is the most accurate reporter of the affects of prescribed medications, will always be invited to be a voice in the team-wide conversation about psychiatric treatment.

+ Lifestyle Coaching

Lifestyle coaching focuses on developing, strengthening and maintaining healthy life practices. From nutrition and fitness to community and career, our lifestyle coaches assist clients in building holistic programs for living that are personalized and sustainable. Clients are provided with guidance, education, encouragement, and accountability for each and every step as they work towards their goals. CAST also understands the importance of professional development and career goal-setting for those in transitional recovery. Therefore, clients have access to a network of support professionals dedicated to cultivating their interests, creativity and unique skills within a healthy and supportive environment. Our network includes professional writers, financial planners, academic advisors, web media experts, career aptitude and personality assessors, and more. Lifestyle coaching may include any of the following elements:

  • Recovery/sobriety
