Meth Addiction Treatment

By Robert Lien, MHA

Recovery from meth addiction is possible. Around the world each day people are staying clean and sober without going back to the use of methamphetamine. For some people, their use of meth started casually by going out to clubs or parties. Meth use may have started with use of prescription pills that produce similar effects to the drug.  As regular use of meth causes a person to crave it more and more, it becomes harder to do basic day-to-day activities without it. Regardless of how someone gets started, the addiction slowly takes over and becomes something that cannot be put down.

Treatment for meth addiction typically starts by evaluating a person’s physical and mental health. Oftentimes, extended use of meth can cause a person’s health to deteriorate due to a lack of nutrition and hydration. Regular meth use will also cause a person to have an irregular sleep cycle, which has a significant impact and effect on one’s mental state. This may include paranoia, hallucinations, intense anxiety and fear. For some people, stopping meth use may require a few days of sleep, lots of fluids, nutritious food for their physical and mental health to be stabilized.

More extensive treatment from meth use may require Medicated Assisted Treatment (MAT) which includes being evaluated by a medical doctor and or a psychiatrist who can prescribe appropriate medications to help a person to stabilize and begin counseling.

The recovery process for meth use is most effective in a community setting. What that means is that the individual connects with other people who are going through a similar experience and can share with each other how they are staying clean and sober today. By utilizing insurance benefits like Anthem Blue Cross, Aetna PPO, Cigna PPO or United Healthcare PPO people can get professional help in a group therapy and individual therapy setting.
