For people who do not require 24/7 medical supervision, or for those who have graduated from a residential treatment program, an intensive outpatient program (IOP) presents a great option. However, one must fully understand the features and benefits of an IOP in Los Angeles to make the best choice for their health, their future, and their loved ones.

What is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?

Commonly known as IOP, an intensive outpatient program in Los Angeles represents a “step up” from traditional outpatient therapy. While traditional outpatient care usually involves an hour of treatment on a weekly, biweekly, or monthly basis, IOP treatment usually involves multiple hours of recovery work on multiple days of every week.

For some clients, IOP provides a way of stepping down support after graduation from a residential treatment or partial hospitalization program (PHP). For others, patients step up to an IOP from outpatient therapy. For others still, IOP treatment is the first step in their recovery journey.

The very flexibility of IOP is what makes it such a unique form of treatment. IOP clients participate in both individual and group therapy sessions. IOP can also include services like case management, medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and family support services, depending on the clients needs.

Who is Eligible for an IOP?

IOP is often the best approach to mental health treatment and dual diagnosis treatment for those who are either transitioning out of a residential treatment program or those who have not been progressing with traditional outpatient (OP) treatment. Many clients that come to CAST Centers have been working with a therapist and psychiatrist but found they need more support.

At CAST Centers we provide a community IOP recovery environment. This means clients connect with others that face similar challenges while working on their individual goals. The CAST Centers clinical team will collaborate with the clients other providers to create strong support system.

Benefits of an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

An intensive outpatient program can be hugely beneficial to those who do not need round-the-clock supervision. By participating in IOP clients have a safe place to learn new ways of managing day to day life and get feedback from others. Clients get to put into practice the new tools and behaviors they lean in IOP and then come back to share what worked or didn’t work.

After all, IOP programs typically provide a high level of care but offer clients the flexibility to continue living at home and attending to their work, school, or family duties. Here are a few of the benefits of IOP treatment:

Privacy

While it has shifted significantly in recent years, one of the main blockades of more people pursuing IOP is the negative stigma involved in needing professional help. Too many people struggle with the concept of their powerlessness against the insidious effects of mental health and addiction to drugs and alcohol. The professional staff at our IOP in Los Angeles is committed to their clients’ privacy, working with them with respect and discretion.

Community

Studies and surveys suggest that one of the keys to maintaining long-term mental wellness and recovery is the bonding that takes place with others in recovery. CAST Centers clients can enjoy the deep sense of community that comes with others understanding all the ups and downs that effective recovery involves. The sense of community that IOP programs provide can prove invaluable to one’s long-term mental wellness.

Flexibility

An IOP lends clients the flexibility to maintain their work, family, school, and household responsibilities while working through their recovery. For instance, CAST Centers clients may have children who require supervision and care. Others have work or education commitments that cannot be suspended indefinitely. IOP treatment offers the flexibility needed to maintain a routine or schedule.

Cost

The cost of IOP is significantly less expensive than residential treatment. This can be a factor why people choose to undergo IOP treatment. If residential treatment is out of the question, financially speaking, an intensive outpatient program presents a comfortable option.

CAST Centers is in network with Anthem Blue Cross, MHN HealthNet and can bill most PPO insurances like Aetna, GEHA and Cigna. Insurance may help cover all or a portion of IOP at CAST Centers.

“CAST’S philosophy is, there is no separation between the mind and the body; we are comprised of one unified system, a system whose health is defined by connection and by communication. The CAST program supports healing by focusing on the integrity of the unified whole.”

What Happens During IOP?

Each client begins their treatment at CAST Centers with a biopscyhosocial assessment that helps to make sure IOP  is the appropriate level of care. This assessment also helps to start an individualized treatment plan and treatment goals.

Clients are assigned an individual therapist at CAST Centers that they will see for weekly sessions and begin attending group therapy sessions 3 – 5 days per week. The schedule can be customized based on clinical needs as well as the clients availability.

Utilizing our CAST Alignment Model clients learn how to manage day to day stressors and how to become proactive rather than reactive. Our therapists guide educational groups that incorporate evidence based practices as well as process groups to help clients get new insights and the ability to change behavior as well as thinking.

Clients share their experiences with each other and provide constructive feedback as they learn and grow together. The IOP environment at CAST Centers offers clients a safe place to put into practice the new way of approaching life in real time.

While in IOP at CAST Centers the clinical team is also collaborating with any other providers a client may have. Many of our clients have been working with a psychiatrist and therapist so as part of our case management it is important to make sure we are communicating and working together as a team.

Throughout the IOP treatment at CAST Centers we are looking to the future and the clients next steps. The clinical team will prepare a comprehensive discharge plan based on each clients needs and each client is welcome to attend our weekly alumni group at no cost.
